Starting in Magic can be a daunting undertaking. There are many aspects to this art.
Fooling someone can be easily achieved and we have many, many effects on this site that will blow the socks of people. But you want to do then just fool someone. you want to entertain them and Amaze them.
A lot of people who start will learn a few tricks from youtube – perform them, not get the best reactions and then give up on the whole idea. Although there is some good stuff out there, and a lot of it is for free, we would highly recommend that you get yourself one good teaching dvd or book, something concentrates on the basic or teaches you a few effects properly. Concentrate on a small number of effects that appeal to you and then practice practice. In front of a mirror, video yourself, show someone close; but practice before you show your magic to the wider world.
A lot of magicians concentrate on a specific sphere in magic (coins, cards, mentalism etc) and then have a few “go to” effects that they know they can do flawlessly and will wow the audience. When we say few- we are talking around as few as ten.
Magic is built around principles and knowing these principles will make you a better magician. There is a great book by Henning Nelms called Magic and Showmanship it explains a wide array of principles and it is a must for anyone keen on the art.
Another thing to think about is looking at doing some “self-working” magic. Here you do not have to worry about the secret moves and you can concentrate on presentation – have a look at the Ultimate Self Working Card Tricks – there are 3 volumes and the stuff they have come up with is spectacular –check here for the first DVD.
We highly recommend the book and DVD “Magic The Complete Course”. This will give anybody (young and old) a great grounding in the principles of Magic. It is the ideal book for anyone to start with.
